A Harvard Business Report published in Sep. 2021 concluded that millions of qualified candidates get rejected at the first stage of the application process due to inflexible filtering rules, which are rarely tweaked once they’re set.

For example, a filter designed to help companies find stable employees, may reject candidates who have had gaps in employment because they were deployed to active military service, or because they went back to school full-time.
